Wyrmwood (mini review)

Wyrmwood tells the tale of a man who goes on a journey to find his sister during a zombie apocalypse. Along the way he meets some people and kills a lot of zombies.

Wyrmwood is an Australian post-apocalyptic movie that features guns and some cars, so that means it is automatically compared to Mad Max. I don't think that this comparison is apt. The movie is more focused on zombies than on the cars. I would compare Wyrmwood to the post-apocalyptic movies that Italy was producing back in the 80's. Those movies were really fun and over the top, just like Wyrmwood.

I liked Wyrmwood a lot. I think that it is one of the best movies of 2015, but it is not without its share of problems. The first being the camerawork. There are barely a handful of non-handheld shots throughout the entire movie. This makes the action hard to follow at times and can give some viewers motion sickness. I know that they used this technique to save time while shooting, but I think that they could have found a tripod to use occasionally.

The second problem is with the wrap-up of the story. The filmmakers leave the movie open for a sequel, but they don't really have the greatest climax in the world. The story seamed so much bigger than the climax gives it credit for. I did like the sister's storyline though.

Overall, Wyrmwood is a hell of a debut. This is what "The Walking Dead" should be and maybe the show runners over at AMC should watch Wyrmwood to see how they can improve their show.
